There are many people working for rescued animals but there are some people who were pioneers in this field. They are the ones who inspired more people to work in this field which can sometimes be thankless and difficult. These are the people who understood that change begins with oneself. Geetanjali Taur, the founder of Saahas for Animals is one such person.
In 2019, Geetanjali who was barely 23 years old, with limited resources took her first steps toward changing the lives of stray and abandoned animals in the city of Pune. However, with her background, one would wonder, how did she end up deciding this? Well, this all started with two street puppies who she saw on her way back from work. They were both sick and she brought them home. Her situation was a little difficult, her parents didn't agree to keep the pups and she felt really bad. She realised that there may be many people like her who see stray animals but can't help them due to various reasons.
One puppy didn't survive but with great difficulty and veterinary help, she managed to keep the second one alive and convinced her parents to let the animal be their pet. They named the little boy Sheru. But after all of this, she was unable to accept the fact that there are many stray animals who need help and support, and that is exactly why she decided to do something about it.
With no financial support and familial constraints, she began rescuing and treating animals one at a time. Her early days were filled with challenges—raising funds through social media campaigns and personal appeals—but her determination led her to establish Saahas, a foundation that stands today as a ray of hope for countless animals.
From those humble beginnings, Saahas has grown into a well-known NGO with a dedicated team of nearly 15 people. The organization now boasts a loyal social media following of over 300,000, reflecting the trust and respect it has earned. The team has rescued and rehabilitated countless dogs and cats, and even extended their efforts to horses and cows.
Their work doesn’t stop at rescues. Saahas provides treatment, vaccinations, surgeries, and food to animals (mainly dogs and cats) in need. The organization also educates the community about animal welfare and the importance of compassion toward strays.
