How can I Make My Dog Comfortable and Safe in the Car?

Updated: Oct 14

Safe Travel with Dog in a Car

Taking your dog along for a drive can be a wonderful bonding experience—but for many pets, being in a car can trigger anxiety, restlessness, or even motion sickness. Whether you’re heading out on a weekend road trip, visiting friends, or simply driving to the vet, ensuring your pet’s safety and comfort should always come first.

This guide covers everything pet parents in India need to know about safe car travel with dogs - from the importance of harnesses and carriers to tips for reducing stress and preventing accidents.

Why Pet Harnesses Are a Must for Car Rides

A dog harness for car travel isn’t just an accessory—it’s a lifesaver.

  • Safety first: A secure harness prevents pets from being thrown forward during sudden brakes or accidents.

  • Driver focus: An unrestrained pet can easily distract the driver by moving around or trying to climb onto your lap.

  • Escape prevention: In emergencies, pets without restraints may dart out of the vehicle and get lost or injured.

  • Extra protection: Harnesses can reduce the risk of injuries from airbags or sharp movements.

If you often take your pet in the car, investing in a good-quality dog harness in India is non-negotiable.

That being said, not all dogs will be comfortable with harnesses and might need some training that will help them learn. My dog is not on harness in a car but we always ensure to drive very carefully at consistent speeds so that she doesn't fall forward due to the jerks.

Keeping Pets Calm During Car Rides

Travelling with pets doesn’t have to be chaotic. Here’s how you can make it stress-free:

  • Use a dog carrier or travel harness to give your pet a sense of safety.

  • Take short trial drives before attempting long journeys.

  • Maintain proper ventilation and temperature inside the car.

  • Bring along toys, blankets, or chew treats for comfort.

  • Avoid feeding your pet a heavy meal right before travel to prevent dog motion sickness.

Practical Tips for Stress-Free Travel

  • Gradually introduce your pet to the car, rewarding them with treats or praise.

  • Play soothing music during the ride.

  • Try pheromone sprays or calming scents like lavender (if you have an anxious pet).

  • Never leave your pet alone in a parked car, especially in India’s hot weather.

  • Take frequent breaks for hydration, potty needs, and stretching.

Making Pets Comfortable in Carriers

Carriers provide security in enclosed spaces.

  • Choose the right-sized crate with proper airflow.

  • Let your pet explore the crate at home before the journey.

  • Secure the crate with a seatbelt to avoid sudden shifts.

  • Add blankets, toys, or familiar-smelling items to create comfort.

Positive Reinforcement Training for Car Rides

If your pet dreads the car, you can change that with patience.

  • Associate the car with good experiences—start with short rides and reward calm behavior.

  • Use a pet seat belt or secured carrier for safety.

  • Be consistent—slowly increase ride duration while keeping things positive.

Motion Sickness

Many dogs experience motion sickness. There are two categories of these dogs.

Category A - Dogs who like car rides but are motion sick.

Category B - Dogs who don't like car rides and are also motion sick.

With Category B dogs, long drives should be avoided if you can't get them used to it even after trying to train them. Then you reserve these drives only for when you have to visit the vet or need to changes places. Basically when it is absolutely necessary. And this may also need you to administer anti-anxiety and anti-emetic drugs to them under the guidance of your vet.

With category A dogs, you can control the motion sickness by ensuring that they travel with empty stomachs or give them anti-emetics before your travel under the guidance of your vet.

Car rides with pets can be enjoyable, but only when approached with preparation and care. By using car harnesses, crates, positive training, and stress-relief strategies, you can keep your dog or cat safe while also ensuring peace of mind for yourself.
